It all happened during our keep ball session at training when I was eagerly informed the score by my Spurs fan of a manager." 4-0"!! he tells me, "4-0"!!. Once again the same old thoughts running through my mind - how we are never able to win those matches that teams of Arsenal's quality would win?. The evening got on and football training came to and end. It was straight to the phone to check if we had created a path for some sort of comeback and we had. 4-2!
Chamakh buries his first goal for 13 months |
Reaching Henly's Corner the TalkSport hosts confirmed that wether it was Jenkinson or Walcott, an equaliser had gone in! Either Walcott was on a hat-trick or Jenkinson had scored his first for Arsenal. This was the Arsenal of old and I was going berserk. Tears streamed down my face, adrenaline was rushing and my mate in the front seat was receiving sloppy kisses from a young Arsenal fan who has never witnessed a comeback like it.
I was home before I knew it. Smelly, hungry and tired I burst through the front door and settled down if that would be the phrase. Before I knew it, 5-4!! Chamakh had scored his first in 13 months. A slick move around the tired and inexperienced Reading defence. Too amazed and nervous I didn't celebrate and sat there not knowing what to do.
The rest was all a blur. 5-5.... 6-5....7-5. As bad as we were in the first half, we were sensational in the second. Chamakh, Arshavin, Giroud playing their part and did themselves and the club proud. Chamakh especially gave us a glimpse of what Wenger expected when he was first arrived. Walcott led the line, like the striker he says he is.
The youngsters in Coquelin and Eisfeld proved what they are capable of and that Wenger's youth policy is reliable.
Before bed, Dad told me "This is how football should be played". I couldn't agree with my old man more. No diving, no cheating, utter respect for the opposition and goals galore.
A night to remember for any football fan and especially any Arsenal fan.
